Biography

Dr Sang-Bing Ong is currently an Assistant Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr Ong has been conducting research studying the roles of cardiac mitochondrial morphology in cardioprotection for the past 12 years – being the first to demonstrate the relevance of mitochondrial morphology in the settings of cardioprotection whereby inhibition of cardiac mitochondrial fission via genetic and pharmacological interventions in the cellular and murine models protects against ischaemia-reperfusion-injury (IRI) (Ong et al., Circulation 2010) and also the first to prove that the pro-survival kinase, Akt (protein kinase B) – a key component of the Reperfusion-Injury-Salvage-Kinase (RISK) pathway protects the heart via downstream modulation of cardiac mitochondrial morphology (Ong et al., Thrombosis & Haemostasis 2015). The efficacy of translating the cardioprotective benefits of mdivi-1 – a small molecule inhibitor of Drp1- a pro-fission protein, into a large animal model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was explored in the study of Ong et al., Int J Mol Sci. 2019. Using a hiPSC-derived endothelial cell model of diabetes, the protective effect of calpain inhibition against IRI was also associated with restoration of autophagy and inhibition of mitochondrial fragmentation (Ong et al., Stem Cell Reports 2019).
